In Mongolia, Clinton argues for free markets with democracy in Asia, challenging Chinese model
ULAN BATOR, Mongolia (AP) ¯¯¯ Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton says Asian countries opening up for international business but refusing to open up democratically will struggle for long-term economic growth.
In a lengthy criticism that seems directed at China, Clinton says nations restricting free expression will find that policy "kills innovation and discourages entrepreneurship" and undermines economic expansion.
She delivered the message at a women's event Monday in Mongolia, China's northern neighbor, where she'll also attend a "Community of Democracies" meeting.
Clinton is touring Asia this week to promote a shift in American strategy in the region. She says working to expand democracy in the region "is not just the right thing to do. It's the strategically smart thing to do."
Clinton will also visit Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia.
