Close ties between UK media, police scrutinized
UK lawmakers grill police on wide variety of UK journalists hired by Scotland Yard
By The Associated Press

LONDON (AP) ' More than a dozen current and former members of Rupert Murdoch's British media empire have found work with the London police department, raising questions about whether the tycoon's powerful press and Scotland Yard have been uncomfortably close.

Figures made public Tuesday during a parliamentary hearing into the phone hacking scandal shaking Britain show that 10 out of 45 of the employees in Scotland Yard's public affairs department once worked for Murdoch's News International.

Previous revelations include the fact that one senior journalist worked as a police interpreter, while another worked as a top police press consultant.

One lawmaker said Tuesday that the ex-journalists were being snapped up by police "almost like a fashion accessory."
