Police: Navy sailor caught with AK-47 in Connecticut was disgruntled, anti-government
NEW LONDON, Conn. (AP) ' Police in Connecticut say a Navy sailor charged with illegally possessing an AK-47 assault rifle was "disgruntled" and critical of the military, and officials were concerned about potential violence.
Cory Dion Caldwell is to be arraigned Tuesday in New London Superior Court. The 24-year-old from Dalton, Ga., was arrested Monday at the Naval Submarine Base in Groton, where he's assigned to the USS Springfield submarine.
Waterford police Sgt. Joseph DePasquale said Tuesday that authorities found the assault rifle, high-capacity ammunition clips, other handguns and a gas mask at Caldwell's home in Waterford. The arrest was the result of an investigation by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, which had received a tip about Caldwell.
A submarine base spokesman didn't immediately return a message Tuesday.
Caldwell is being held on $200,000 bail.
