Court: Brazilian grandmother of NJ boy in noted custody case should get hearing on visitation
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) ¯¯¯ An appellate court has ruled the Brazilian grandmother of a New Jersey boy who was in an international custody battle should get a chance to fight in court for visitation with him.
The New Jersey court says in a decision made public Wednesday that Silvana Bianchi Ribeiro (rih-BEHR'-oh) should get a chance to prove terminating her relationship with Sean Goldman would harm him. But the court wouldn't act on her requests for interim visitation with the 12-year-old Tinton Falls boy and for a court-appointed attorney to represent him.
The decision overturns a lower court's ruling. It was first reported by Newark's The Star-Ledger newspaper (http://bit.ly/NuUNd6 ).
The boy was born in the U.S. but was taken to Brazil by his mother, who later died. His dad fought and got him back.
The court urges the grandmother and the father to settle.
