DC council chairman charged with bank fraud
DC Council Chairman Brown accused of bank fraud; 2nd council member charged this year.

WASHINGTON (AP) ' The chairman of the District of Columbia Council has been charged with overstating his income on loan applications.

Kwame R. Brown on Wednesday became the second D.C. councilmember in six months to be criminally charged.

Federal prosecutors charged Brown with a single count of bank fraud. He was charged in a criminal information. The document generally signals a defendant's plan to plead guilty.



Brown's lawyer, Frederick Cooke, did not return calls seeking comment, and the U.S. Attorney's office declined comment.

Brown on Tuesday said he had no plans to resign.

The charges come six months after then-Councilmember Harry Thomas Jr. pleaded guilty to stealing more than $350,000 in city finds.
