Dam bursts in Bulgaria; At least 8 people killed, 10 missing in region's flooding
SOFIA, Bulgaria (AP) ' A dam in southern Bulgaria burst Monday after days of heavy rain, bringing the toll from the region's flooding to eight dead, 10 missing.
The dam on the Ivanovo Reservoir collapsed, sending a 2.5-meter (8-foot) torrent into some 700 houses in the village of Bisser near the Greek border, civil defense chief Nikolai Nikolov said.
Four bodies were found in the raging waters, three of them elderly men, the Bisser mayor reported.
Authorities have declared a state of emergency in much of southern Bulgaria. District governor Irena Uzunova said four others were killed and 10 people are still missing in the floods that have washed away bridges and roads.
The government warned both Turkey and Greece of massive floods surging down the Arda and Maritsa rivers.
The civil defense agency also warned that two other bigger dams at Ivaylovgrad and Studena were on the brink of overflowing and urged residents to prepare for an evacuation.
Landslides derailed the engine of an Istanbul-bound train near the border town of Svilengrad, causing no injuries but leaving at least a dozen foreigners stuck for hours, Uzunova said.
