Del Monte sues FDA after imports of cantaloupes from Guatemala halted
WASHINGTON (AP) ' Del Monte Fresh Produce is striking back at the Food and Drug Administration with a lawsuit after the agency halted imports of its cantaloupes from Guatemala, saying they may be contaminated with salmonella.
Such lawsuits are rare, and former FDA officials say the threat of litigation could make the agency more reluctant to tell the public about the possibility of contamination in food.
Del Monte conducted a voluntary recall of the cantaloupes imported from Guatemala in March after government officials determined they were linked to 12 cases of salmonella poisoning. The FDA halted the imports in July.
The Florida-based company sued to get a federal court in Maryland to lift the import alert.
