Democratic governors accuse GOP of sabotaging economy to help Romney
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (AP) ¯¯¯ Democratic governors are accusing Republicans of deliberately sabotaging the economy to help Mitt Romney oust President Barack Obama.
Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley said in an interview that he has no doubt Republicans are trying to slow the economy before the election. Connecticut Gov. Dan Malloy said Republicans are blocking jobs legislation to help Romney make the case that Obama has failed. And Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin says it raises the question of how far Republicans will go to make sure Obama is defeated.
A spokesman for House Speaker John Boehner says it's not true. He says Republicans are working to help small businesses, stop tax increases and repeal Obama's 2010 health care reform law.
The governors' comments came during a three-day meeting of the National Governors Association in Williamsburg, Va.
