Democracy workers from Egypt meet with lawmakers
Democracy workers who left Egypt meet with US lawmakers on Capitol Hill
By The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) ' American democracy workers who face charges in Egypt of stoking unrest are meeting with lawmakers on Capitol Hill this week.

Four of the workers, including Sam LaHood and John Tomaszewski of Del Ray, N.J., met Monday with Sen. John McCain, the top Republican on the Armed Services Committee. McCain recently traveled to Egypt where he met with the country's military leaders.

LaHood, the son of Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood, was among six Americans who left Egypt last week after nearly $5 million in bail was posted and the government lifted a ban on their travel.

Forty-three civil society workers, including 16 Americans, have been accused of fomenting unrest with foreign funding. U.S. officials say it's up to each individual whether to return if court appearances are sought.
