Police divers discover cannon, possibly 200 years old, in Detroit river during team training
DETROIT (AP) ' Police divers have discovered a cannon that could be more than two centuries old in the Detroit River.
The Detroit Police department says its dive team found the 6-foot-long cannon near the Cobo Center downtown during a training session in July. It's the fifth cannon found in the area in three decades.
The department and the U.S. Coast Guard plan to raise the cannon from the river on Wednesday. It's expected to be restored and preserved by the Detroit Historical Society.
Detroit Historical Society Curator Joel Stone tells the Detroit Free Press the cannon will be studied to try to determine its age and where it came from.
Three other cannons were recovered in the 1980s and a fourth was recovered by the department's dive team in 1994.
