Dictionary covers regional dialects from A to Z
Dialect dictionary defines snollygoster _ a self-promoting politician _ in time for election
By The Associated Press

MADISON, Wis. (AP) ' It's a dictionary that took about 50 years to complete. And the final volume arrives just in time for the 2012 presidential election with words such as snollygoster, a Southern term for a self-promoting politician.

The recently completed Dictionary of American Regional English explains more than 60,000 regional words and phrases. It offers readers a broad history of how the English language is spoken in the U.S.

A University of Wisconsin English professor started work on the dictionary about 50 years ago. The final volume, covering S to Z, is set to be released later this month.

Scholars and word fiends say the dictionary is an invaluable resource. Already released have been referenced in books and articles about racial and political identity, labor history, human sexuality and even cursing.
