Police: Driver in Bronx crash was going 68 in a 50 mph zone, clipped highway divider
NEW YORK (AP) ' New York City police say the crash that killed seven members of a family happened after the speeding driver clipped the highway divider and damaged a tire.
Police said at a briefing Monday that Maria Gonzalez was driving at 68 mph when she bumped the concrete barrier between the two directions of the highway and the left front tire went off kilter.
The posted speed limit on that stretch of the Bronx River Parkway is 50 mph. Police say she was likely going with the flow of traffic, which is often faster.
The SUV skittered Sunday across three lanes of traffic, hit a concrete curb on the right and went airborne over a 4-foot-tall fence. The fan flipped in midair and landed about six stories below.
Police are investigating but don't suspect anything criminal.
