Driver in fatal hit-and-run case of American jogger surrenders to police in Italy
ROME (AP) ' The driver of a car that hit and killed an American woman out jogging has turned himself in after his vehicle was filmed on roadside anti-speeding cameras, police said Friday.
Italian news reports reported that the suspect is a local businessman who claims to have fallen asleep at the wheel of his car in Tuscany on Sunday when it fatally struck Allison Owens, 23, from Columbus, Ohio.
Carabinieri police Col. Antonio Frassinetto told reporters that investigators tracked down his car by analyzing speed camera footage.
The driver, who has not been publicly identified, contacted a lawyer and turned himself Friday, a move which might lessen criminal penalties in the case of any conviction.
Italy's Sky TG24 TV, reporting from the Tuscan city of Arezzo, quoted investigators as saying that police were able to determine the make of vehicle from paint found on a guardrail near where Owens body was found ' a canal close to a busy state highway running through the town of San Giovanni Valdarno
Frassinetto could not immediately be reached to confirm that detail.
Owens' family lawyer, Valentino Durante, told The Associated Press that the driver was being questioned in the presence of his lawyer by investigators. Police have not publicly identified him.
Prosecutors are reportedly investigating the man for possible manslaughter, and leaving the scene of an accident.
