Duncan praises push to help undocumented students
Sec. Duncan says he supports allowing kids of illegal immigrants to pay in-state tuition
By The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) ' Education Secretary Arne Duncan says he's encouraged some states are allowing the children of illegal immigrants to pay in-state tuition at public colleges.

Duncan pointed to Rhode Island. This fall, the Rhode Island Board of Governors for Higher Education unanimously approved in-state tuition for illegal immigrants starting next year.

The National Conference of State Legislatures says an additional 11 states have laws requiring that colleges offer undocumented students in-state tuition if they meet certain requirements.

Duncan tells The Associated Press that the children of illegal immigrants are either going to be taxpayers and productive citizens or they are going to be on the sidelines. This places the Obama administration in step with Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry, who has been criticized by party conservatives for embracing that policy in Texas.
