EU envoys in Ukraine to study Tymoshenko case
EU envoys in Ukraine to observe case of jailed former premier Tymoshenko
By The Associated Press

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) ' Two high-profile European Union representatives have come to Ukraine to monitor the legal cases against jailed former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko.

Former European Parliament President Pat Cox and former Polish President Aleksander Kwasniewski will be watching proceedings against Tymoshenko, who has been sentenced to seven years in prison on charges of abuse of office and who faces other charges.

The West has condemned the prosecution of Tymoshenko as politically motivated and has called for her release. Senior EU officials are boycotting European Championship soccer matches hosted by Ukraine to protest the case.

Cox and Kwasniewski were expected to meet President Viktor Yanukovych later Monday. They also hope to visit Tymoshenko and attend an appeals hearing in her case in late June.
