Egypt appoints new judges for nonprofit trial
Egypt appoints new judges to hear trial of 43 democracy workers including 16 Americans
By The Associated Press

CAIRO (AP) ' Egypt has appointed new judges to hear the trial of 43 democracy workers, days after six Americans who were among those charged left the country after nearly $5 million in bail was posted.

The state-run Middle East News Agency said Saturday the first hearing in the new trial will take place March 8.

The Egyptian government's crackdown on pro-democracy and human rights groups has provoked a deep diplomatic crisis with the U.S. and jeopardized millions of dollars in aid.

All but one of the 16 Americans charged left the country on Thursday. The democracy workers have been accused of stoking unrest with foreign funding.

The U.S. has said the decision about whether they'll return should their appearance at court be demanded was up to each individual.
