Egypt election panel disqualifies Mubarak's ex-PM from presidential race candidate
CAIRO (AP) ' The state-run news agency says Egypt's election panel has disqualified another presidential hopeful because of a new law that strips former regime officials of the right to run for office.
Ahmed Shafiq, the last prime minister under Hosni Mubarak, is the 11th candidate to be disqualified from the May 23-24 election.
The disqualification comes after the Islamist-dominated parliament passed a law forbidding senior Mubarak-era officials from running for office for the next 10 years. The law was ratified by the military council.
Tuesday's decision leaves a dozen contenders in the race, and narrows the competition between Islamists and former Arab League Chief Amr Moussa.
