By The Associated Press

CRYSTAL LAKE, Ill. (AP) ' The Federal Aviation Administration says a local official has confirmed two people are dead after a small plane crashed in suburban Chicago.

FAA spokeswoman Elizabeth Isham Cory says the single-engine aircraft crashed late Thursday afternoon near Crystal Lake. She says a coroner in the region has confirmed two fatalities.

A McHenry County coroner official was headed to the scene and the office could not immediately give details. Police in Crystal Lake did not have further details.

Little information is available about the crash which happened near the Lake in the Hills Airport, approximately 50 miles northwest of Chicago. The FAA says it's unclear if the plane was taking off or landing.

The National Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation.
