Mother struggled with hunger in hard times before deadly standoff in Texas welfare office
LAREDO, Texas (AP) ' The woman who held police in a seven-hour standoff at a Texas welfare office before fatally shooting herself and her children had been struggling to feed the family.
Neighbors said Rachelle Grimmer would walk down the highway after midnight and beg closing crews at restaurants for food they planned to throw away. She walked because she had already sold her truck for $400 to buy food.
Her children were seen bathing outside the family's trailer with a garden hose, and 10-year-old Timothy wore the same camouflage shorts day after day.
He was taken off life support Thursday. His 12-year-old sister died Wednesday.
Trailer park manager Janie Rodriguez says Grimmer vented often about her inability to get food stamps despite repeated requests.
