Family: Islamist activist detained in UAE as pressure on opposition mounts
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) ' The son of a rights activist in the United Arab Emirates says his father has been detained as part of an apparent crackdown on perceived opposition figures.
Hassan al-Dhufairi says his father Saleh was led away by security agents after prayers Sunday at a mosque in Ras al-Khaimah, the most northern of the seven semiautonomous emirates comprising the UAE.
The elder al-Dhufairi was arrested by authorities last month for web postings critical of state security operations. The UAE says the case was referred to state security court.
UAE officials had no immediate comment.
The UAE has stepped up pressure over the last year on Islamist groups and others considered possible critics of the country's ruling network.
