Father appeals for help for mentally ill suspect
Manhunt for mentally ill suspect in 2 murders puts Northern California coastal town on edge
By The Associated Press

FORT BRAGG, Calif. (AP) ' Heavily armed law enforcement officers are still searching for an armed man who killed a Fort Bragg city councilman as well as a local conservationist. The manhunt for 35-year-old Aaron Bassler is going into its fifth week with local and federal agents scouring the thick redwoods of Mendocino County.

James Bassler says his son is mentally ill and likely believes he's running from alien spacecraft. He's angry that county officials never listened to his pleas to get his son medical care and is hopeful that his son's case will lead to the adoption of the so-called Laura's Law ' which would allow for a court-ordered public assistance program for outpatient treatment. Bassler believes the murders might have been avoided if the law were in place.
