First lady raises campaign cash in Kentucky while touting Obama record on economy, health care
By The Associated Press

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) ' First lady Michelle Obama praised her husband's stewardship of the economy and his signature federal health care law as she raised campaign cash in Kentucky before more than 1,000 supporters.

She told an audience in Louisville Thursday evening that President Barack Obama understands lingering hardships from the recession, but lauded upbeat economic reports of new national hiring and 23 straight months of private sector job growth.

The crowd at the Kentucky Center for African American Heritage voiced support for the health care overhaul, vowing to back efforts to keep Republicans from rescinding it.

Political experts say Obama faces a very difficult prospect in carrying Kentucky in the November contest. The last Democrat to carry the state that favors conservatives in federal contests was Bill Clinton in the 1996 presidential election.
