First look: Viewsonic PJ359W LCD projector
HD capable projector has outstanding image quality
By John Virata

The Viewsonic PJ359W is a portable LCD projector targeted at mobile presenters, gamers, and others with the need to output a high-resolution image at up to HD resolutions. The PJ359w features a three panel LCD TFT that has a maximum hardware resolution of 1280x800, and features HDMI connectivity for connecting to the latest HDMI capable devices. It has a contrast ratio of 500:1, 2000 lumen brightness rating, 30" to 300" display size, 4:3 and 16:10 aspect ratio, a 35" - 456" throw distance, and a 1.5 (wide) ~ 1.8 (tele) throw ratio.

The PJ359w features vertical keystone correction, for optimum display, and sports a variety of controls to fine tune your image. The unit weighs less than 4lbs and ships a carrying case and remote control. It features a three year hardware warranty and one year lamp warranty.

In use
The PJ359W was setup in a darkened room that serves as a media room. The projector was setup approximately 13 feet from the wall. The display surface used was a Panoview Gray Wolf II. A variety of content was projected, including various late 60s, early 70s era surf flicks such as Cosmic Children and the Golden Breed, to newer movies such as Riding Giants and Step into Liquid. While the projector produced faithful images with these movies, it really stood out when playing the Blu Ray version of Planet Earth. Images were sharp, blacks viewed true, and colors were outstanding. All of these movies were played off an HP notebook computer with a Blu Ray player. The room itself isn't the darkest, and as a matter of fact, the Gray Wolf II screen hangs in front of a bay window that is covered with wood shutters, yet there were no viewing issues.

The Viewsonic PJ359W is priced around $800.

First Impressions
LCD projectors have come down considerably in price over the last few years, and as they compete with the big flat screen TVs, the manufacturers tend to pack more bang for the buck in exceedingly more compact footprint devices. The Viewsonic PJ359W is a solid unit backed by a great warranty for those who live by presentations on the road with an accompanying notebook computer. It also works equally well in a stationary setting. It has some nifty features, including a quick off that shuts the unit down quickly for get up and go situations. The unit is priced well under $1000 which is amazing considering the price of an HD capable LCD projector of a few years ago. For more information, visit
