Flood worries rise with water in New England
Flood worries rise along with the water in upstate NY, New England as Irene passes over
By The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) ' The remnants of Irene have turned rivers and creeks into raging torrents in parts of upstate New York and New England.

Authorities in Vermont's capital, Montpelier, warned residents to be ready to evacuate late Sunday as the Winooski River rose.

Parts of downtown Brattleboro and Bennington, Vt., were submerged. Authorities banned the sale of alcohol in New Paltz, N.Y., in an effort to keep spectators away from the dangerous Wallkill River.

Irene took a more westerly path than forecast, putting landlocked Vermont in its path. Homes flooded and culverts and roads washed out statewide.

Sirens were triggered Sunday by rising waters at a dam on a creek near Gilboa in upstate New York. Swollen creeks and rising rivers are filling streets in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
