Frayed trust between NY prosecutors and Strauss-Kahn accuser adds to clouds on case's future
NEW YORK (AP) ' The once-strong relationship between Dominique Strauss-Kahn's accuser and the New York prosecutors in his sexual assault case has crumbled into hostility.
Prosecutors have publicly said the woman has a history of lying that has seriously weakened the case. Her lawyer is calling for a special prosecutor. He says the Manhattan district attorney's office has discredited her and is fearful of trying the high-profile case.
Prosecutors were still weighing Thursday whether to go ahead with the case against the former International Monetary Fund leader. Strauss-Kahn denies the allegations. His lawyers want the case dropped.
The woman's questionable credibility could make her a problematic witness. But experts say prosecutors' fractured relationship with her could prove to be a still bigger hurdle in a case that would hang heavily on her cooperation.
