Ex-Procter & Gamble CEO Smale dies; credited with forging into China, other emerging markets
CINCINNATI (AP) ' A former Procter & Gamble chief executive who expanded the consumer products maker with major acquisitions and an overseas push has died. John G. Smale (SMAIL) was 84.
Cincinnati-based P&G says Smale died Saturday. A spokesman didn't immediately give details about where Smale died or what he died of.
Smale had led P&G from 1981 to 1990, acquiring such brands as Olay, Pantene and Vicks and launching P&G into China and other emerging markets.
Smale also was a former General Motors Co. chairman who served 20 years on its board.
