Former child maid, who was brought to Calif. from Egypt to work for family, becomes US citizen
MONTEBELLO, Calif. (AP) ' A woman who was brought from Egypt when she was 10 and forced to work as a maid for a Southern California family has become an American citizen.
Shyima Hall took her oath of citizenship at a ceremony Thursday in the Los Angeles suburb of Montebello.
The 22-year-old says she needed to become a citizen so she could eventually work as either a police officer or immigration agent, helping other victims of human trafficking.
Hall was brought to California in 2000 by an Egyptian family. She was forced to live in their garage and work as their servant for nearly two years before authorities freed her.
She was later adopted by an American couple and graduated high school. She is now a sales supervisor at a watch store.
