GOP's prospects of winning Senate control attracts millions of dollars from outside groups
WASHINGTON (AP) ' Republicans have a clear shot at winning control of the Senate and that's attracting tens of millions of dollars from GOP-allied groups like the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and American Crossroads.
The GOP needs to capture four Democratic seats to grab the majority and Democrats have all but conceded one ' Nebraska ' where Sen. Ben Nelson decided against a third-term bid in the heavily GOP state. Senate control will hinge on tight races in Massachusetts, Nevada, Montana and Missouri. Open Democratic seats in Virginia and Wisconsin also will be critical.
Democrats currently have a narrow edge: 51-47 with two independents who caucus with the Democrats.
Still, Democrats are more upbeat about their prospects. They cite President Barack Obama's improved standing, a healthier economy and the divisive GOP presidential race.
