GOP presidential hopefuls clash in AL, MS in race for delegates, survival
WASHINGTON (AP) ' Republican presidential candidates are colliding at a Southern crossroads with Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich competing for delegates or just plain survival in Alabama and Mississippi.
The first handful of Alabama returns favored Santorum, who was pulling 34 percent of the vote. Romney had 28 percent and Gingrich 26 percent.
Caucuses in Hawaii and American Samoa were also on the calendar in the race to pick an opponent to President Barack Obama this fall.
