GOP pushes back on effort to limit kids' food ads
House Republicans push back on Obama administration's effort to limit food ads for kids
By The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) ' House Republicans are pushing back against an Obama administration effort to curb junk food advertising to children. The Republicans are siding with food companies that say the government is going too far.

Several government agencies have proposed guidelines aimed at pressuring food companies to curb ads for sugary and fatty foods on television, in stores and on the Internet. Companies would be urged to market foods to children only if they contain specific healthy ingredients and are low in fats, sugars and sodium.

Republicans want to use a spending bill that covers the Federal Trade Commission to delay the guidelines by calling for more studies on the potential costs and impact. Food companies say they fear the government will retaliate against them if they don't volunteer to adopt the guidelines.
