Professors offer college course to illegal immigrant students barred from top Georgia colleges
ATHENS, Ga. (AP) ' College students returning to campus in Georgia will find that a new policy has closed the doors of the five most competitive state schools to illegal immigrants. But five professors at the University of Georgia are finding a way to offer them a taste of what they've been denied.
The professors have volunteered to teach a course once a week to students who've graduated from high school but are barred by the policy from the state's top schools. They're calling the program Freedom University.
The policy bars any state college or university that has rejected academically qualified applicants in the previous two years from admitting illegal immigrants. It's supposed to address public concerns that illegal immigrants were displacing legal residents.
