German humorist "Loriot," best known for satirical cartoons, dies at 87
By The Associated Press

BERLIN (AP) ' German humorist Vicco von Buelow, better known by his nom de plume "Loriot," has died. He was 87.

His publisher, Zurich-based Diogenes Verlag AG, said Tuesday that von Buelow died in his hometown of Ammerland in Bavaria on Monday night of old age.

Born in 1923 into an aristocratic German family, he began his career as a magazine cartoonist in the 1950s. He adopted the name Loriot, the French for oriole, from the bird pictured on his family's coat of arms.

His drawings were known for their satirical view of the daily life of wealthy Germans and he also wrote several books.

Von Buelow was in 1998 awarded Germany's federal "Great Cross of Merit with Star" ' one of the country's highest awards, for his lifetime's work.

His publisher says the burial will be private.
