Germany hopes for Russian change of heart on Syria after Putin wins election
BERLIN (AP) ' Germany's foreign minister says he hopes Russia will recognize that it's on "the wrong side of history" and rethink its stance on Syria now that its presidential election is over.
Russia ' along with China ' so far has stood by Syrian President Bashar Assad. It has rejected all forms of interference in Syria's affairs and protected it from condemnation by the U.N. Security Council.
Germany has strongly advocated U.N. action. Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said Monday he hopes that now that campaigning is over and "perhaps the view is a little clearer in Russia" Moscow will think again about solidarity with people in Syria.
He adds: "Perhaps Russia will then recognize that it stands on the wrong side of history, that this is not about diminishing Russian interests in the region."
