Surging in the polls, Gingrich bets on unconventional strategy
MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) ' Though Newt Gingrich is soaring in the polls, he's betting his presidential campaign on inexperienced political operatives ' and social media.
Gingrich, the former House speaker, has been scrambling to hire staff in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina in recent weeks.
He's entrusting his New Hampshire campaign to a staffer with no campaign experience. And his headquarters in the first-in-the-nation-primary state doesn't have phones.
In June, it looked as if Gingrich's presidential bid was over after several top staffers quit. But he has recently taken Herman Cain's place in opinion polls as the conservative alternative to Mitt Romney.
Romney is flexing some organizational muscle this weekend in New Hampshire: 500 volunteers are gathering to knock on 5,000 doors, make 12,000 phone calls and pass out 5,000 yard signs.
