Gingrich faces tough questions on race and class at South Carolina black church forum
By The Associated Press

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) ' Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich is being challenged about his past statements on race and class during a forum at a black church in South Carolina.

Gingrich is taking questions from a crowd of more than 50 people at Jones Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church. Several questioners asked Gingrich about his assertion last month that poor children lack work ethic and should work at least part time cleaning their schools in order to learn about work.

Gingrich says his comments were misconstrued.

The forum was a rare appearance by a presidential primary candidate before an audience unlikely to vote in his party's primary. Exit polls indicate that blacks made up just 2 percent of those who voted in South Carolina's 2008 Republican primary.
