Gingrich says rivals' criticism taking a toll
Gingrich: Rivals' criticism of his record not based on facts, acknowledges campaign toll
By The Associated Press

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) ' Newt Gingrich is acknowledging that criticism of his record is taking a toll but he tells supporters in Iowa that much of it isn't based on facts.

Gingrich told supporters on a telephone town-hall event that his GOP presidential rivals haven't always been honest.

For example, Gingrich says he opposes abortion rights, even though his challenges say otherwise.

Critics of the former House speaker questioned his conservative credentials and have taken issue with the big paychecks he took from mortgage giant Freddie Mac.

Gingrich says a business he led was only a consultant to Freddie Mac and he says most of the $1.6 million payout went to overhead.

Criticism of Gingrich's record is mounting as the Jan. 3 caucuses in Iowa near.
