NC governor says Highway 12 repairs will get tourists back on Hatteras Island within a month
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) ' North Carolina's governor says the state will build a temporary bridge and make road repairs on Hatteras Island, allowing the popular tourist destination to reopen within a month.
Gov. Beverly Perdue said Friday that a bridge will be built across the largest breach carved into N.C. Highway 12 by Hurricane Irene. All other breaks in the road also will be filled in.
Perdue says the repairs will cost $10 million, which will be paid for with federal dollars. She says the short-term repairs will give transportation officials time to develop a long-term plan for the highway.
Hurricane Irene slammed into Hatteras Island on Saturday morning, creating several breaches on the road. Residents of some villages are being allowed to return to the island this weekend.
