AP Exclusive: Grandmom says Indiana teen arrested in cousin's stabbing death loved 4-year-old
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ' The grandmother of a 14-year-old girl arrested in the fatal stabbing of her 4-year-old cousin says she's devastated by the child's death and dumbfounded because the teenager loved the little boy.
Angie Shanks said Monday her 14-year-old granddaughter had looked forward to last weekend's visit by her cousin and his 11-year-old sister. She says there were no problems between the teen and the boy, and she says, "I've lost two grandchildren that I loved very much."
The 14-year-old faces a preliminary murder charge in Leon Thomas III's death, but prosecutors will decide if she'll face formal charges.
Shanks didn't say what happened at her home Saturday night. Police found the child dying when they responded to a call about a stabbing. The girl was found later wandering in the street.
