Rams defensive coordinator Gregg Williams apologizes for role in bounties while with Saints
By The Associated Press

Gregg Williams has apologized for his role in a bounty program that rewarded players for injuring opponents while he was with the New Orleans Saints.

Now the defensive coordinator in St. Louis, Williams calls the bounty system "a terrible mistake."

Williams has been known for his aggressive, physical defenses both as a coordinator with four NFL teams and as head coach in Buffalo.

The league said Friday that between 22 and 27 defensive players were involved in the program administered by Williams, with the knowledge of coach Sean Payton. Williams, hired by the Rams in January, says, "Instead of getting caught up in it, I should have stopped it. I take full responsibility for my role. I am truly sorry."
