HUD secretary announces cities plan in Detroit
HUD secretary unveils plan to foster growth by pairing federal, local officials in 6 cities
By The Associated Press

DETROIT (AP) ' The Obama administration is launching a pilot program designed to spark economic growth in urban America by partnering federal officials with local decision-makers in six cities.

U.S Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan announced the new program Monday in Detroit.

The program will start in Detroit; Chester, Pa.; Cleveland; Fresno, Calif.; Memphis, Tenn.; and New Orleans.

Donovan says each city will have a team that includes employees from several different federal agencies who will work with local officials on issues their mayors have identified as important. The issues could include such things as developing transportation infrastructure and improving job-training programs.

Detroit Mayor Dave Bing says he's excited to see the U.S. government invest human capital rather than money that hasn't always been used well by previous city leaders.
