Hearing scheduled for Trayvon Martin shooter
Hearing scheduled for man charged with 2nd degree murder in Trayvon Martin's death
By The Associated Press

SANFORD, Fla. (AP) ' A hearing is set for neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman, who is charged with second-degree murder in Trayvon Martin's death.

Attorneys called for the brief status hearing on Friday, a day after the 28-year-old Sanford man made his first appearance before a judge.

Prosecutors say he fatally shot Martin in the chest during a confrontation on Feb. 26 in a community of townhomes in Sanford, a suburb of Orlando.

Zimmerman says he shot Martin in self-defense and has pleaded not guilty.

The lack of an arrest for more than 40 days after the shooting led to protests nationwide.
