New Mexico investigators say hole where Carlsbad boy died likely an old water well from 1940s
CARLSBAD, N.M. (AP) ' New Mexico engineers say it appears a hole where a Carlsbad boy died is an old water well that was never used and was likely drilled in the 1940s.
The Carlsbad Current-Argus reports state engineers concluded that because the well is not on file with the state, which was required after 1947.
Authorities say the depth of the well is 32 feet and engineers believe it was never completed, since the existing water table in the area is deeper than 100 feet.
As of Tuesday afternoon, no charges or sanctions had been issued against the property owner.
Four-year-old Samuel Jones lived next door and fell into the hole Saturday. He was discovered Sunday and his body was recovered Monday morning.
