House acts to stop rules for child labor on farms
House acts to block Labor Department from proposing new safety rules for child labor on farms
By The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) The House has barred the labor secretary from imposing new safety rules for children working on farms, putting a legal stamp on a Labor Department decision to put off action on the rules.

The Labor Department last April withdrew the proposed safety rules after being hit with a storm of protests from farm groups who said they would have prevented young people from working on family-run farms. The department added that the rules would not be pursued for the duration of the Obama administration.

But bill sponsor Rep. Tom Latham, an Iowa Republican, said that even with that assurance, legislation was needed to make sure that federal bureaucrats would not carry through with what he called "misguided" regulatory attempts to prohibit children under 16 from operating farm equipment.
