House voting to ease airport screening for troops
House voting to create airport screening preference system for troops
By The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) ' Military travelers on official duty would get special preference to move through airport security checks faster under a bill before the House of Representatives.

Lawmakers were set to vote Tuesday on the legislation. The Senate would still have to vote on it, but if the bill becomes law, the earliest beneficiaries may be troops returning from Afghanistan next year and their family members ' who also would receive preferential treatment.

Sponsors envision the Homeland Security Department adopting measures that might let military travelers go through checks without having to remove boots, belts and bulky jackets. The government already is expanding an intelligence-driven "trusted traveler" program that allows frequent fliers to keep their shoes, belts and jackets on and leave computers in bags while going through security checks.
