Illinois mother arrested carrying shotgun in St. Louis charged in 2 children's shooting deaths
EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (AP) ' An Illinois prosecutor calls the shotgun slayings of two children allegedly killed by their mother in East St. Louis brutal and frightening.
St. Clair County state's attorney Brendan Kelly on Friday charged 25-year-old Yokeia Smith with first-degree murder in the Wednesday deaths of her 4-year-old daughter and 5-year-old son.
Smith remains jailed in St. Louis, where she was arrested outside a television station while holding a shotgun shortly after hitting two pedestrians with her car near the Gateway Arch.
The children's bodies had been found in the family's home across the Mississippi River. An 8-year-old sibling escaped unharmed.
It's not clear how soon Smith will be returned to Illinois. One of her aunts told reporters Friday the killings may never be explained but that the family stands behind Smith.
