Moroccan rapper imprisoned for anti-police lyrics protests jail conditions with hunger strike
By The Associated Press

RABAT, Morocco (AP) The brother of a Moroccan rap artist imprisoned for a song that attacks police says his brother has gone on hunger strike to protest prison conditions.

Mouad Belghouat known as El-Haqed, or "the Enraged" was convicted of insulting state employees and sentenced to a year in prison in May for writing the song.

His brother Abderrahim told The Associated Press on Monday that Belghouat had started a 48-hour hunger strike to protest the conditions, including a lack of phone privileges, harassment by other prisoners and random searches of his personal effects.

Belghouat was active in the pro-democracy February 20 movement and wrote songs attacking the king for his wealth and highlighting inequalities in Moroccan society.

His song "Dogs of the State" accuses police of taking bribes.
