In Georgia, Gingrich helped build foundation for GOP's success
ATLANTA (AP) ' Newt Gingrich is hoping his decades of work building the Republican base in Georgia will pay dividends for him on Super Tuesday.
Many state GOP leaders credit him with championing conservative policies and laying the foundation for what a Republican majority could accomplish, back when Democrats were in firm control of all the levers of state government.
Congressman Jack Kingston calls Gingrich the "Godfather of the Republican Party in Georgia."
Gingrich has led in recent polls, but Georgia is hardly a given for him. Presidential rivals Rick Santorum and Mitt Romney have invested time and resources in hopes of prying away some of Georgia's 76 delegates.
That has forced Gingrich to spend valuable time in Georgia that he could have spent in the nine other states voting Tuesday.
