Ind. House Dems may end block on labor bill soon, speaker not yet imposing fines
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ' Indiana's House Democratic leader says his caucus can't block a right-to-work proposal forever.
Patrick Bauer said Friday that his caucus might return to Indiana's House chambers as soon as Monday.
Republican House Speaker Brian Bosma, meanwhile, said he isn't ready yet to start imposing costly fines on Democrats for staying away.
Most House Democrats stayed away Friday as they continue to prevent consideration of the bill, which would prohibit contracts that require workers to pay mandatory union fees.
Their absence, however, didn't stop a Republican-led Senate committee from advancing the bill to the full Senate on a 6-4 vote.
Bosma said hitting Democrats with $1000-a-day fines, which Republicans pushed through after a five-week boycott last year over the same issue, is a "last resort."
