Investigators puzzled by air tanker crash in Utah
Air tanker 'heavily fragmented' after deadly Utah crash, federal investigators say
By The Associated Press

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) ' Federal investigators say little debris remains from an air tanker that crashed while fighting a wildfire in southern Utah, killing two pilots.

National Traffic Safety Board supervisor Debra Eckrote told The Associated Press on Wednesday the cause of the crash isn't obvious and the heavily fragmented wreckage will be recovered within days for a closer look.

Eckrote says a 600-yard debris path is littered with pieces of the 50-year-old air tanker. She says the pilots were dropping flame retardant or had just done so when the Lockheed P2V went down on Sunday.

A fire consumed much of the wreckage.
