Iowa GOP tentatively sets caucuses for Jan. 3
States jockeying with each other for lead position in delegate-selection process for 2012
By The Associated Press

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) ' Iowa is tentatively slated to hold its GOP presidential caucuses on Jan. 3.

That's the word from a member of the Iowa Republican State Central Committee, which made the tentative plans late Thursday in a conference call.

Drew Ivers, a member of the central committee, says the panel plans to formally announce the date on Monday.

Iowa GOP Chairman Matt Strawn plans to spend the weekend talking with his counterparts in New Hampshire to coordinate the date of the lead-off caucuses in Iowa and the first-in-the-nation primary in New Hampshire.

Strawn says there was a strong consensus on the governing board that the caucuses needed be held in January and not move into the holiday season.

Iowa is changing its date after Nevada decided to hold its caucuses in mid-January.
